This Guide works ONLY with the iPhone 3G and the iPhone OS 4.0 b1 due to the limitations of the redsn0w jailbreak!Have you been trying almost everything to get the iPhone OS 4.0 Beta to work like I did and asked yourself why all the „guides“ doesn`t work? They just coudn`t work because they were all fakes. You can NOT run a customized .ipsw file on a non-jailbroken device (read here why)!
The iPhone dev team released the new redsn0w Beta2 Jailbreak for the iPhone 4.0 Beta1. It jailbreaks your device but there`s no hacktivation included, what means that the UDID registration is still needed to activate your device!
I figured out a way to combine the „fake“ guides to a single one that WORKS! :-)
I will not take any responsability for broken devices, this is just for experimental purpose!
Guide:
- Download a copy of the iPhone OS 4.0 Beta (google: "os4-iPhone1,2_4.0_8A230m_Restore.ipsw download")
- Install this Version with iTunes on your device (Press alt while clicking on the restorebutton in iTunes and choose the iPhone 4.0 .ipsw file manually)
- Download the redsn0w 0.9.5 BETA2 from here: redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta2
- Run redsn0w and follow the on screen instructions.
- Wait till the device reboots and wants to activate with iTunes
- Download iPhone Explorer from here: iPhone Explorer 1.1.8.3
- Open iPhone Explorer and navigate to System/Library/CoreServices
- Copy SystemVersion.plist to your desktop by dragging it out of the window
- Open the file with Textedit and delete the following lines:
- Save the file and drag it back into iPhone Explorer, choose „overwrite“
- Wait a few seconds and restart your iPhone.
Now you can activate it with iTunes. I`m not sure if this is always possible because I changed the Apple iTunes signature server to Saurik`s.
If your iPhone still won`t activate just follow these steps to change your signature server:

That`s it, worked fine for me. You can restore your iPhone with your saved 3.x backups. To backup from 4.0 with iTunes you need to install the latest iPhone OS 4.0 SDK (google).

Hey you took out the part of the cracked ipas. Really good guide the only guide on net. Appsync won't come out until 4.0 is relase ? Winterboard don't work and shit does this thing crashes. Let's see how beta 2 goes.

Appsync isn`t avalible yet. I`m working on it, tried to trick Cydia by editing my System Version in the .plist to 3.1.2. It installed but bricked my phone, had to restore it. Adding the .ipas manually and set the folder permissions deosn`t work either. As soon as I get the time I`ll try to figure out a way to install your .ipas!
The 4.0 Geta isn`t THAT buggy but if you want to downgrade to 3.x you can follow my next how to guide, it will be avalible soon!

The video is from iH8sn0w and shows how to edit the decrypted .ipsw firmware file. In my method you edit the SystemVersion.plist directly on the device!

Update: I tried to use the redsn0w 0.9.5 beta2 but it deosn`t work and ends with a restoremode-iPhone. Maybe they changed the baseband or (what I think) it deosn`t work because they changed the .ipsw decryption keys. I`m now trying to find them..

ReplyDelete@Akshat: Try to download the .ipws once again, it seams that it`s corrupted. "Activate" menas the activation with iTunes without havong the devices UDID registered as a developer. If you need to unlock your iPhone to use an unofficial network stay away from this guide! It updates your baseband and it`s currently NOT unlockable. Downgrade of the baseband isonly possible if you are one of the little lucky ones that have the old bootloader!

@ Mike: This can not be done with windows. You`ll get errors when syncing with iTunes and there is no jailbreak tool for windows. You need a mac or a hackintosh (a PC running Mac Software natively or in a virtual machine).

This is an awesome guide.. good job.. Has anyone tried this method on the 3gs without the jailbreak, seems like it should work ok, as long as you use iphone explorer to modify the file before activating with itunes.. maybe i'm wrong, but i'm dying to try it :) ..

ReplyDelete@ darren: You can`t access the "root" folder without a jailbreak, this is what jailbreaking is all about..
@ imadeit: As soon as there will be a jailbreak for the 3GS it will work for this device.
No jailbreak - no modification of the root filesystem!
The only way would be to modify the .ipsw files before you use them to update your iphone (you can find the SystemVersion.Plist there also after decrypting. I wrote an article why this is impossible..
